ObjectiveIn this study, through the screening and meta-analysis of articles on acupuncture treatment for migraine, the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment for migraine was discussed, which would provide a certain theoretical basis for clinical application.MethodsThe China Biology Medicine database(CBM),China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),WANG-FANG DATA,CQVIP,Pubmed, and Embase were searched for articles published in Chinese or English before September 24,2018 by electronic database. Two reviewers independently screened randomized controlled trials on acupuncture treatment for migraine. We assessed the quality of the studies using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for RCTs,then extract data, and analysis data in the ReMan5.3.The Odds Ratio(OR)were calculated by two kinds of variables, and the weighted mean difference(WMD)were calculated by the continuous variables, which were expressed by 95%Confidence Interval(CI)ResultsA total of 12 trials included 809 patients,407 in the experimental group and 402 in the control group. The methodological quality evaluation results included in the original test were all of moderate bias risk.1.In terms of overall efficacy, the treatment in the experimental group was more advantageous(OR=2.47,95%CI(1.53,4.00),P<=0.0001<0.05);2.The experimental group was superior to the control group in reducing the number of headache attacks(WMD=-1.08,95%CI(-1.62,-0.53),P=0.0001 0.05).3.The treatment in the experimental group was superior to the control group(WMD=-0.94,95%CI(-1.33,-0.55),P<0.00001<0.05)on the score of reducing headache degree.4.In terms of reducing the number of days for headache attack, the experimental group was superior to the control group(WMD=-1.62,95%CI(-3.09,-0.15),P=0.003<0.05).5.The test group was superior to the control group(WMD=-0.49,95%CI(-0.93,-0.06),P=0.03<0.05)in reducing the duration of headache.6.On the score of reducing migraine associated symptoms, the experimental group was superior to the control group(WMD=-0.33,95%CI(-0.57,-0.10),P=0.006<0.05).ConclusionIn this study,a meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials showed that acupuncture could be one of effective treatment for migraine in alleviating the pain of migraine, and reducing the number of episodes, days, duration and accompanying symptoms. Our findings are limited by the research bias and heterogeneity of the included studies. It is necessary to further confirm the efficacy of acupuncture for migraine with higher quality clinical research.
