Background:At present,no confirmed pathogenesis or therapeutic regimen has been established for chronie fatigue syndrome(CFS).Previous studies have already shown the efficacy of acupuncture on treating CFS.While there are relatively few reports on Jin' s three needle acupuncture technique(JTN)for improving theanxiety and depression state of patients with CFS.This study was designed for evaluating the efficacy of JTN on the anxiety and depression state of CFS patients.Method/Design:This study is a randomized non-blind controlled trial.Patients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited and randomly assigned to either the JTN group or the control group. Both interventions were conducted for 5 consecutive days per week and last for 2 weeks. The outcome measures include the self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depressive scale(SDS),Fatigue assessment instrument(FAI),and 12-Item short form health survey(version 1,SF-12V1).All scales were assessed before and immediately after intervention.Adverse events were also monitored during the study for safety evaluation. Results:In both groups, the SAS score,SDS score, and FAI score(including score of factor 1)showed siginificantly reduction(P<0.05)after invention. While the test group showed significantly lower SAS and SDS score than the control group. There were no satistic significance of FAI and the factor 1 scores between groups after treatment(P>0.05).For SF-12V1,both the PCS score and MCS score of the two groups showed significantly elevation after treatment(P<0.05).But neither the PCS nor the MCS score showed marked difference between the test group and the control group(P>0.05).Conclusion:Both JTN therapy and basic acupuncture therapy may help to improve the anxiety and depression state of CFS patients. While JTN therapy showed better therapeutic effect on improving the anxiety and depression state. No significant difference has been found on physical fatigue and quality of life between the two therapies.
