Research On Medical Communication Of Medical Missionaries In Modern Guangzhou

The introduction of Western medicine in modern China was synchronized with the missionaries,and a special group,medical missionaries,was born.Guangzhou is the first stop of medical missionaries' activities in China.It is a milestone in the history of Chinese medical science.As a heterogeneous culture of different nature,the eastern spread of western religion and medicine has the dual color of cultural colonization and enlightenment.So far,the ideas,texts and methods of communication transmitted by Guangzhou still have certain enlightening significance.From the perspective of cross-cultural communication,this paper re-examines the medical and missionary activities of western colonists in modern Guangzhou,which are carried out from four aspects: the main body of communication,the text of communication,the channels and methods of communication,and the attitude and response of the recipients.On the subject of communication,the complexity and diversity of medical missionaries' identity as a special subject of communication are revealed by taking three representative figures in different stages of development as examples: doctor and missionaries,missionaries and diplomats,doctors and women,ghosts and angels.At the same time,it brought the gospel.In the dissemination of texts,taking the treatment concepts of ophthalmology,obstetrics and Gynecology and psychiatry as examples,this paper illustrates the principle of giving priority to knowledge of body and disease in the process of dissemination of different cultures,and medical missionaries lay the precondition and foundation for missionary work.As a product of missionary work-newspapers,books and other early printing media,it also provides an important platform for the spread of Western medicine,and is an important supplement to the communication network of hospitals,medical schools and so on.The localization of Western medicine in China has undergone a process from concept to action,from theory to practice,and from the weak group at the bottom to some members of society to the official upper class.Modern western medicine communication activities of Guangzhou medical missionaries have provided many enlightenments.Even with the help of force and religion,cross-cultural communication still takes the local traditions of the recipients and people's psychological consciousness as the premise,from persuasion to conquest,rather than the contrary.Missionaries' medical borrowing activities objectively brought about enlightenment of knowledge or ideas such as body,disease,women and so on,and became the enlightenment in modern times.The forerunner of the national democracy and science movement.
