Objective: To summarize the anatomy and etiology, classification, clinical manifestation, imaging(radiography and magnetic resonance imaging)and clinical presentation of discoid meniscus. Methods: A case of symptomatic complete discoid medial meniscus completely coalesced with the anterior cruciate ligament of knee joints admitted to the Joint Surgery Department of the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University in 2017 was retrospectively analyzed.A 29-year-old male presented with intermittent pain and swelling of the right knee for 2 years.Based on radiographic,MRI and physical examination findings,he was diagnosed with discoid medial meniscus tears. Results: Arthroscopic examination revealed a complete discoid medial meniscus and the anterolateral(apical)portion of which was completely coalesced with the anterior cruciate ligament.Careful Probing of the meniscal surface revealed there was a longitudinal tear extending from the tibial spine to the midportion of the meniscus. The patient reported an satisfactory results at the 12-month follow-up.Conclusion: The diagnosis of discoid meniscus is mainly based on physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging and arthroscopic probe, and radiography also have the value of assisted diagnosis. The main purpose of treatment is to eliminate the symptoms. The treatment of discoid meniscus should consider its type and whether it is symptomatic. With the development of arthroscopic techniques, the treatment of discoid meniscus has gradually changed from traditional meniscectomy to discoid meniscus.
