| Prinsepia utilis Royle is a folk medicine widely used in Naxi,Bai,Yi,Mosuo and other ethnic minorities in Yunan province with the effects of“clearing heat,anti-inflammatory,stimulate saliva and anti-diarrhea”.It contains a variety of flavonoids and terpenoids compounds that have the effects in antibacterial, adjusting blood glucose and lipid,immunomodulatory,anti-inflammatory,anti-tumor.This study examined the effect of P.utilis Royle leaves extract on the development of BPH using a testosterone-induced BPH model rats. There are no reports of P.utilis Royle for the treatment of BPH at present.Male castrated rats of BPH were established by subcutaneous injecting testosterone propionate induction method.According to observation of prostate index and prostate tissue morphology,VEGF expression,ACP,T,DHT and E2 levels in serum,GSH-Px,CAT,SOD and MDA levels in tissue homogenate and compared with finasteride of positive control, the anti-prostatic hyperplasia effect of P.utilis were investigated. The results showed that P.utilis leaves extract in all doses could significantly decrease prostate weight and prostate index(P<0.01),improve the pathological condition of prostatic hyperplasia, decrease serum ACP activities(P<0.05)and GSH-Px level(P<0.05).Compared with the model group, the levels of T and DHT in serum of rats in P.utilis leaves high dose group were significantly decreased(P<0.01),the CAT and SOD levels in tissue homogenates of rats in P.utilis leaves high and medium dose groups were significantly decreased(P<0.01).These results suggested that P.utilis Royle leaves extract might have anti-BPH properties via regulationg of the hormone levels, antioxidant and anti-proliferative effects.P.utilis would be a potential herb for the treatment of BPH. |
