Objective To investigate the age-related changes in body composition and bone mineral density(BMD)in a large sample of Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D).Methods 1534 hospitalized patients(860 males and 674 females)with T2D between 20 and 85 years of age were enrolled. All patients were stratified to four age groups in each sex:≤54,55-64,65-74,≥75 y.Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA)was used to assess body composition and BMD,including total fat mass(FM),visceral adipose tissue(VAT),subcutaneous adipose tissue(SAT),total lean mass(LM),appendage lean mass(ALM),trunk lean mass(TLM),total BMD(TBMD),lumbar spine BMD(LBMD)and femoral neck BMD(FNBMD).Additionally, fat mass index(FMI;FM/height~2),lean mass index(LMI;LM/height~2)were calculated, and the differences of body composition and BMD in different age groups were analyzed and compared. Results As per the trends,(1)in terms of BC,there was no statistically significant difference in FMI among the male, and the peak of LMI occurred in the group≤54y;FMI increased with age, while LMI did not change significantly in female.(2)VAT increased for both genders, both ALM and TLM decreased, and SAT did not change significantly.(3)In terms of BMD,TBMD did not change significantly in male, but gradually decreased in female;FNBMD decreased gradually in both males and females, while LBMD did not change significantly. Conclusions In Chinese T2D,with the increase of age,the fat mass increased, the lean mass and BMD decreased, and the changes of total body composition and BMD were different between male and female, but the regional distribution was similar.
