Chinese modern drama is the production of western drama theory. Strictly speaking, itis originated from western drama. Under the influence of Chinese bourgeois revolution andwith the rising of modern drama in China, Chinese playdom stepped out the first pacetowards modernization. Eugene O'Neill, together with his works, entered China at thebeginning of the20thcentury, providing important reference to Chinese modern drama andaccelerating the development of it.Taking following two research questions as its start point: How does the translation ofEugene O'Neill's dramas influence China, and what are these influences, this thesis firststudies the backgrounds and influences of the translation of O'Neill's dramas in threedifferent historical periods and shows the significant progress of Chinese playdom thatEugene O'Neill had brought about. Then through comparison between The Emperor Jones,Zhao Yan Wang and Champaign from such aspects as techniques of expression, stage effect,dialogues, etc., the internal relations between the three are figured out, which furtherproves the enlightening functions of O'Neill's plays to the formation and development ofChinese modern dramas.From cultural reform in1920s, till the opening-up of China in1980s, translations ofEugene O'Neill's dramas had exerted great influence on Chinese playdom. Many famousChinese dramatists like Cao Yu, Hong Shen, etc., are more or less influenced by EugeneO'Neill in their artistic methods of drama creation. By doing this study, it is hoped to havea profound command of Eugene O'Neill, as well as his contribution to the formation anddevelopment of modern Chinese dramas.
