This report based on the poetic essay translation of the great poet Wallace Stevens, makes an introduction, analysis and a conclusion about the translating task. The translation material is an excerpt of The Contemplated Spouse:The Letters of Wallace Stevens to Elsie edited by J.Donald Blount which gathers in a single volume the 272 extant letters with the span of twenty-five years. The author cooperating with another translator translates the letters and editor's overviews from 1908 to 1916(engagement period and first years of marriage). The author mainly takes charge of overview parts. This translating practice helps revealing Stevens's personality, also his attitudes to the living and his marriage, also helps target readers their further understanding of the origin of Stevens's poems and their creation.During the translation process, except the introduction part from the editor, marriage news, letters, poem stanzas, and comments from others are quoted. This translation process is developed under the guidance of domestication principle with the translation methods and techniques of addition, omission, division, combination and shift applied. And the key and difficult points during the translating process are proper nouns,culture-loaded words, long sentences and various styles of the text,in which the most important part is how to replant the different language styles of the source text.To overcome the difficulties above, the author employed such methods as:1)set the tone before translation;2)imitate the stylistic markers from parallel texts;3)combine different translation methods together, especially for the recasting, annotation and etc.,with an attempt of getting an accurate and elegant translated textbook without translationese.
