Towards A Corpus-based Critical Translation Studies Approach To Political Discourse Translation

Corpus-based critical translation studies is an emerging area of research arising from a partnership between corpus-based translation studies and critical discourse analysis.Through in-depth analyses of examples from the Chinese-English translations of Xi Jinping's speeches in intercultural contexts from March 15,2013 to March 15,2016,this study explores a corpus-based critical translation studies approach to analyzing ideological factors in political discourse translation.It is argued that in order to reveal ideological factors in political translation,it is plausible to investigate such aspects of text as transitivity,nominalization,modality,classification and key words using corpus linguistic tools.This study first offers an overview of the status quo of corpus-based critical translation studies.Then the theoretical foundations of corpus-based critical translation studies in political discourse translation are discussed.The most important component of this thesis focuses on corpus-based critical translation studies analyses of the Chinese and English transcripts of Xi Jinping's speeches in intercultural contexts in such aspects of text as transitivity,nominalization,modality,classification,and key words.It is concluded that there is a great deal of ideological information underlying the translation of political discourse,and corpus-based critical translation studies can provide a feasible approach to analyzing such ideological factors in political discourse translation.It is expected that the corpus-based critical translation studies approach to political discourse translation explored in this thesis will not only provide a new perspective on and a new approach to analyzing ideological factors in political discourse translation but also expand and deepen the study of critical translation studies.
