Analysis Of Xi Jinping's Discourse Characteristics And Their C:E Translation Strategies

Diplomatic speeches refer to speeches delivered by national leaders or senior diplomats in diplomatic activities.In international politics and foreign relations,diplomatic speeches are important means and tools for politicians or diplomats as national spokesmen to state their own country's positions and attitudes in international affairs and implement their domestic and foreign policies.Speaking for China,President Xi Jinping is well-known for his diplomatic speech,which is an important way for foreign media and people to know about China's national conditions and major policies.In 2018,China hosted four major home diplomatic activities,in which President Xi Jinping attended and delivered keynote speeches.He conveyed the voice of China's commitment to promoting openness,cooperation and common development in firm and clear words,which was highly acclaimed by the international community.It is of vital importance in promoting China's foreign publicity,encouraging Chinese culture to “go global” and helping the world better understand China.It plays an important role in enhancing China's international influence and shaping the nation's image.Therefore,studying the discourse characteristics of President Xi Jinping's diplomatic speeches and their Chinese-English translation has undoubtedly become an important project in diplomatic activities.It will directly affect the effectiveness and quality of China's foreign publicity.Skopos Theory suggests that translation is a purposeful activity,that the purpose of translation determines the process and method of translational action and that translation strategies are mainly influenced by the translation purpose and the type of text to be translated and the expectations of the target language readers.Diplomatic Speech is a kind of applied text integrating political propaganda and communicative purpose,it is feasible and practical to apply Skopos Theory to the English translation practice of diplomatic speeches.Thus,based on the theoretical framework of Skopos Theory--the core of The Functionalist Translation Theory,the thesis takes President Xi Jinping's four major home diplomatic speeches in 2018 as the research corpus,analyses his discourse characteristics and Chinese-English translation strategies.According to numerous examples,the thesis concludes that President Xi Jinping's diplomatic speech is featured by politics,which is closely related to the political hot issues of today's world,reflecting the political position and attitude of China's peaceful development,so the language is formal and rigorous.What's more,President Xi Jinping is good at telling Chinese stories,quoting Chinese traditional idioms and skilled at employing conceptual metaphors when delivering speeches,which makes his speech vivid and appealing and has won extensive praise from domestic and foreign media.And in order to enable English readers or audiences to understand and accept the information transmitted by China,translation strategies like domestication and foreignization,including addition,omission,division and combination,are adopted in Chinese-English translation.
