Buddha clothing,Bodhisattva dress and Lay Buddhist clothes are the major forms of Buddhist clothing.The research on the Han Buddhist statues clothing is of great theoretical value.On the basis of relevant research,the Buddhist statues clothing of Dunhuang grottoes in different periods is compared with each other.According to historical data,literature books,and on-the-spot investigation,the innovation points and expanding value have been summarized.From the research on the style and origin of Buddhism statues clothing of Dunhuang grottoes,besides the introduction and conclusion,the main body of the thesis is divided into four parts,including“Classical Buddha Clothing”,“The style evolution of Buddha Clothing of Dunhuang grottoes from Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties”,“The Bodhisattva dress of Dunhuang grottoes in Northern Dynasties”and“The Vimalakirti clothing of Dunhuang grottoes”.The introduction mainly includes the reason,significance and state-of-the-art of research,and the specific research content has been set.In the chapter“Classical Buddha Clothing”,the related literature has been checked to infer the material object,and the basic concept of Buddha clothing,such as the name,constitution,size,order and style,has been investigated and discussed.In the chapter“The style evolution of Buddha Clothing of Dunhuang grottoes from Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties”,the context and origin of the style evolution of Buddha Clothing of Dunhuang grottoes have been organized,and the process of localization of Buddhism has been embodied through the changing of Buddha clothing.In the chapter“The Bodhisattva dress of Dunhuang grottoes in Northern Dynasties”,the 428th grotto among the Mogao Grottoes in the Northern Zhou Dynasty is mainly taken as an example.Through the literature and ancient books,the“sankaksika”as the Bodhisattva dress first appeared in the Northern Zhou Dynasty,hence the Bodhisattva dress in the 428th grotto is named“sankaksika”.In the chapter“The Vimalakirti clothing of Dunhuang grottoes”,the systematic research on Vimalakirti clothing has been made from the historical evolution of Vimalakirti statues clothing to the effect of Vimalakirti faith on clothing,and the gradual process of localization of Vimalakirtiimage has been reflected by the comparison of the changing images of Vimalakirti in different periods.Through the reviewing of development of Buddhism character costumes of Dunhuang Grottoes in different periods and the comparison of the features of Buddhist clothing in different periods,the conclusion has been made.That is to say,Buddhism has eventually evolved into Chinese Buddhism due to the influence of history,political,social,geographical,and ethnic factors,since the introduction of Buddhism from India.
