Reading is an important part for senior high school students EFL(English as a Foreign Language)learning.Proper teaching method plays a crucial role for an effective learning.However,there still exist many problems in English reading teaching,like unified teaching method for all material and students.This research applied the cooperative learning method Jigsaw IV to senior high school students' English reading class,hoping to provide educators with an alternative choice in their teaching.As one of learning methods in cooperative learning,Jigsaw provides individual and group accountability,equal opportunity for success,motivation,and concerns for individual needs.In this kind of reading class,students achieve success as a consequence of paying attention to their peers,helping and tutoring each other.As a result,the classroom atmosphere tends to be a cooperative one instead of a competitive one.The aim of this thesis is to explore the effects of application of cooperative learning method Jigsaw IV on students' reading abilities and emotional attitudes in English reading class.Research questions include:1.Can cooperative learning method Jigsaw IV used in the senior high school EFL classes improve the students' reading achievements?2.What are the experimental class students' attitudes toward using the cooperative learning method Jigsaw IV in reading class?This research was carried out through an experimental design which lasted for eight weeks from September 12 th,2016 to November 12 th,2016.The teaching activities all took place in the classrooms within about 45-min reading class.The teacher taught the two classes used the same teaching material-New Senior English for China Student's(Book 5& Book 6)published by People's Education Press(2013)with the same teaching equipment.117 students of Grade two in Tongwei No.3 Middle School were selected from two parallel classes: one experimental class and one control class.The experimental class received instruction according to Jigsaw whereas the control class was instructed via teacher centered teaching method.The instruments include the feedback questionnaire of cooperative learning method Jigsaw IV and the English achievement tests.A pretest and a post-test were conducted to find out changes of students' reading achievement.The Statistical Package for Social Science(SPSS version 20.0)was used by the researcher to analyze the data from the tests.Findings indicate that the Jigsaw IV technique contributed to English reading achievement of the senior high school students.Furthermore,although the feedbackquestionnaire showed that the participants had inconsistent opinions on Jigsaw IV method,most of them held positive attitudes toward it.Ultimately,students highlighted some important factors that made the Jigsaw IV method successful in their English reading.
