Zhang Chengzhi is an extraordinary Muslim writer,who cuts a striking finger in Chinese contemporary literary world by virtue of his creative novels.Zhang has produced a mount of masterpieces,such as “Black Horse”,“North River”,and“History of the Soul”.He soon focuses on writing prose after the creation of “History of the Soul”.His prose works are wide-ranging in topic,covering almost every aspects of the society.The author mainly studies his west prose,which reflects the“three pieces of land”--Inner Mongolia grassland,Loess Plateau of Hui Peoople,and the famous natural pasturelands north and south of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang.The thesis mainly studies the novelist Zhang Chengzhi and his west proses,aiming to explore the great significance of Zhang's writing about west.It is intended to conduct the study through three aspects: local conditions and customs in the western part of China,survival circumstances of people living at the bottom of society,as well as Zhang's spiritual exploration of the west.The thesis is divided into four parts: the first part is introduction,which explicates the purpose,significance,research methodology,and research approach of the study,mainly through the overall review of the existing studies about Zhang Chengzhi's proses.The second part is the first chapter of the paper,it presents the peculiar scenery of western part and local people's honesty and simpleness on the base of its unique regional characteristic.Zhang Chengzhi considers the “three pieces of land” as his spiritual hometown in his prose writings,which manifest his own growing and personal experience.The third part is the second chapter of the paper;it focuses on people living at the bottom of society in these three lands.It can be concluded by three words: suffering,dilemma,and transcendence.In terms of this,Zhang goes deep into common people's trivial everyday life,vividly presents their authentic survival circumstances.Furthermore,he unfolds those people's poetic dwelling place,and speaks highly of the beautiful humanity and noble spiritual world in suffering.He also praises the ordinary people's struggles against fate,and their courage to overcome sufferings in times of hardship.The fourth part mainly focuses on the exploration of the spirit of Zhang Chengzhi.Zhang Chengzhi has travelled a lot in the west of the mountains and plateau,appreciating numerous wonderful sceneries.It cannot be simply attributed to his love of nature.His persistent back and firm steps seem to be looking for something.In addition to looking for the superficial appearances,he has been persistent firmly looking for his spiritual home and eventually converted to the folk religion.Zhang interprets and conveys the profound connotation of religious belief using his passionate writing.Meanwhile,he commits himself to rational thinking and examines the culture of the Hui Nationality.The regions in border area of west China,where multiculture exist harmoniously,are the place which ethnic minorities inhabit.In the place of cultural mixing,Zhang Chengzhi,as the spokesman,explores the profound connotation.
