A Study On Hsu Fukuan's Theory Of Artistic Style

The research on the artistic style is a frontier problem in the study of art and literature.Although Hsu Fukuan has not explained specifically,the study on Qiyun and the research on Wenti obviously belongs to the study on the artistic style.The study on Qiyun is a study on the traditional theory of Chinese paintings.The study on Wenti is a research on the traditional theory of Chinese literature.So far few scholars attach importance to the relations with them.The article is divided into four parts.The first part discusses the ideological background of Hsu Fukuan's theory of artistic style.In his opinion,Chinese traditonal culture is mainly the culture of the mind.Developing the Mind Studies is the ideological basis of the theory of the artistic style.His worries about the lost value of the oriental traditional culture,especially his culture introspection on modernism in the art and literary circle of Taiwan in the1960 s,consititutes historical background of his argument.Correspond to Kant's aesthetics potentially affects his artistic conception and academic methodology.The second part is about the study on Qiyun of the theory on the Chinese traditional paintings of Hsu Fukuan.In his opinion,Qi is a style of male or sublime which originates from the resolute tempeament.Yun is a style of feminine which stems from peaceful temperament.Qi plays a leading role between Qi and Yun.From the ponit of view of development,the formation of Qiyun is a course of subject-object unity which consititutes two stages of homology and transference.From static point of view,Qi and Yun are comprised to a unified style and achieve the region of intergration of the form and the spirit.The reasons for the formation of Qiyun are analyzed.The third part is about the study of Wenti which is the literature theory of Hsu Fukuan.Wenti refers to the figure and the style of literature.Firstly,Wenti is a figure of artworks which consist of many pictures described by writing.Secondly.Wenti is a style of works which refers to the spirit of the figure.The definition of Wenti is established in the conceptual comparison of genre ans style.Genre is divided into different species basing on the quantity of characters and different themes stressing on the authors' subjective.The meaning of Wenti is not the same as style.Wenti is about the figure and the style of authors' temperament.In Hsu Fukuan's opinion,Wenti consists of three factors:Ticai,Tiyao,Timao.Ticai is the same as genre basing on the quantity ofcharacters.Tiyao is contents basing on the themes of artworks.Timao is the keywords of theory of Wenti which contains two essences,one is characters and figure,another is spirit of artworks.The formation of Timao is restricted by Ticai and Tiyao.The causes of Wenti are discussed.The last part of the article is the comprehensive analysis of the theory of artistic style of Hsu Fukuan.Although the study on the Qiyun and the research on the Wenti constitute to the theory of artistic style,the study on the Qiyun is mainly the theory of artistic style,the research on the Wenti are not totally the theory of artistic style.Though Timao is the core factor of study on Wenti,Ticai and Tiyao consititute to genre and the study on genre belongs to the study on artistic form.Qi and subject are joints of Qiyun and Wenti.Qiyun is used to describing the temperament of subjects and is borrowed to evaluate paintings by Xie He who was an artist on Southern Dynasties.The character“Ti” in the word “Wenti” originally refers to the human body.In the forming course of Qiyun,Qi plays a leading role.Qi is a jonit of subject and object.Finally,achieving the region of intergration of the form and the spirit is the ultimate goal of artistic style of Hsu Fukuan.
