The translation material is an expert from the textbook Chinese Traditional Culture(the2th edition)for the common elective course on humanities and social sciences in colleges and universities,which illustrates traditional Chinese thoughts,social life,culture and art,etc.Besides,it demonstrates the quintessence and charm of Chinese traditional culture,and deeply analyzes its humanistic intension.Thick translation,proposed by Kwame Anthony Appiah in his essay Thick Translation in1993,is a mode of translation in which the translator seeks with accompanying glosses and annotations to situate the readers into a rich linguistic and cultural context.The purpose of such an approach is to draw target readers to the source text and to engender in them a deeper respect for the source culture and greater appreciation for the way people of other backgrounds have thought and expressed themselves.As to culture-specific words and expressions involved in the source text,to reach the purpose of a better understanding of Peking Opera as the quintessence and the perception of abundant background information,the translator applies thick translation.Structurally,this paper starts with the features of linguistic type,task description.process description.The translation strategy and methods,the most important part of the paper are illustrated in following parts.Translation strategies are analyzed with the specific cases translation process.Ultimately,the author hopes that through translating of the culture of Peking Opera,its charm and connotation will be introduced more widely.
