Translation is an activity that is growing rapidly in today's globalized world. At the present stage of translation studies the scholars have collected extensive theoretical and practical materials, studied cultural and linguistic-cognitive basis of translation, made significant steps in the direction of translation automatization. However, all these and many other achievements do not allow us to claim, that translation studies have exhausted their possibilities.New advances are opening new horizons for research and revealing unresolved problems. The theorists have attempted to formulate the criteria for assessing translation throughout the history of translation studies, but evaluation is still an area of controversy. There is always a question on translation quality assessment criteria, its adequacy and equivalence.Especially, such a problem arises in the research of literary translation that opens to the scholars a huge number of problematic issues. In the present thesis rendering of positive evaluative meanings is considered as one of the factors affecting the achievement of translation adequacy. Moreover, the author analyzes translation of evaluative language from the perspective of conventional norm of translation and identify the individual translator's strategy aimed at transferring positive evaluative vocabulary. The research also illustrates the influence of the translator's cultural representations on translation of evaluative lexis.Taking into account the fact that evaluative language in the original text is connected with the author's system of values and culture that s/he represents as well as the reality that is described,a translator reveals certain evaluative elements in the translated text. This is also due to the nature of evaluation:it is aimed at calling reaction of the characters of a literary text,as well as its readers.Literary texts are full of evaluative lexis, and that is why, without any doubt, requires to be taken into account while rendering from one language into another.Study on how evaluative language expressed by English-speaking authors is refracted in Russian translations, allows us to reveal a universal as well as culturally-specific nature of evaluation functioning.
