Nowadays, tourism is one of the fastest growing and expending industries in the world. As a tourism country, China is attracting numerous travelers to make a tour every year because of a long history of more than five thousand years and abundant tourism resources and historical sites. China's tourism has been developing rapidly since the policy of reform and opening -up was adopted in 1978. According to the estimation of the World Tourism Organization, by the year of 2020, China will become the World's largest tourist destination for international tourists. The C-E translation of tourism materials has been a principal medium of the publicity of Chinese culture and an essential element in attracting of foreigners to travel in China. As one of the oldest cities in the world with a vivid and rich history and culture, Xi'an has attracted more and more foreign visitors to have a tour. However, the quality of tourism translation in this area is not very good, many of them are filled with translation errors, sometimes fail to express correct tourist information to foreign visitors or even cause misunderstanding. It is necessary to explore proper translation theory so as to improve the quality of tourism translation of Xi'an. Regarding translation as an action with purposes, Skopostheorie emphasizes that translations methods should be decided by their intended functions of the target text, thus broadens the vision of translation studies. Skopostheorie overthrow the traditional translation criterion—equivalence, and put forward a new one-adequacy. It is an adequate translation only if the target text fulfills its intended functions. In this paper the author analyzes the tourism translation errors based on the Skopostheorie. In light of Nord's"Functional Classification of Translation Errors", the author discusses these errors from the following four aspects: pragmatic translation errors, cultural translation errors, linguistic translation errors and text-specific translation errors. After pointing out the reason of such translation errors, the author also makes an attempt to put forward the revised versions and then the author also gives rise to several effective translation methods. The tourism materials concerned in this thesis are all collected from the scenic spots in Xi'an, they all show the status of the C-E tourism translation in Xi'an, so the data analyze in this thesis is real and representative. The result of the study may help to enhance the translator's ability to avoid these translation errors and make the tourism translation adequate thus improve the quality of tourism translation in this area.
