Li Jieren's roman-fleuve trilogy, which covers Stagnant Water with Ripples,Before the Storm, and Great Billow, shows the ups and downs of Sichuan from the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 to the Revolution of 1911,and from these works readers can feel the living flavor of society and the turmoil of then China. In these three books,Li Jieren presented the views of three ordinary Sichuan families of different social classes, putting them together to reflect the complicated events and changes. Therefore, these novels are regarded as pioneering history novels in modern Chinese literature which inherited the roman-fleuve trilogy style.Instead of following the mainstream literature crying out for democracy and science,by creating family rebels and new youths to celebrate the May 4th movement,or by exposing the dark side of human society,he put the great historical narrative and complicated comprehension of social reality into everyday routine, regarding folk as modern intellectual's soul sustenance, recording modern history of Sichuan in the dimension of history. He created normal but special Sichuanese characters, embellishing the regional customs. His creations make Chinese mainstream culture more colorful, bearing his great ambition of writing the history and reflecting the populace's voice. That's why these novels have become the mainstay of Chinese novels. This research is,therefore,to analyze the folk narrative and depiction in Li Jieren's roman-fleuve to discover how Li reflected the historical storms, concentrating on Chinese people's agitation, loss and rebellion in Sichuan by depicting conflicts between the new and the old,and by presenting the political turmoil from a unique perspective, calm observation and real experience. It will study how he dug nationality under the traditional cultural psychology through his creation and how he put his modern pursuits in Bashu(Sichuan),and to further explore his writing attitude demonstrated in creating those folk spirits.
