A Practice Report On The Translation Of Chinese Tea Ceremony From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Since ancient Silk Road opened up,it has acted as an important bridge linking the communication between eastern and western countries.Tea is one of major goods exported from China to western countries.Obviously,tea enjoys a high reputation.With the development of globalization,economy and trade among countries are increasingly frequent and various goods are exported.In 2013,President Xi Jinping proposed “One Belt One Road” strategy,which reminds westerners of ancient prosperous Silk Road period.Furthermore,it can broadcast Chinese tea culture.Therefore,the desire of translations of tea culture texts is rocketing.The thesis is a practice report about three chapters translation of Chinese Tea Ceremony.It describes translation processes including material collecting and theory preparation before translating,difficulties encountered during translating as well as reflection and revision after translating.In addition,under the guidance of relevance theory,the thesis conducts a case study from two aspects: optimal relevance in communicative context and optimal relevance in language structure.On the part of optimal relevance in communicative context,both different social and cultural context and language users' cognition have influence on translation method choices.On the part of language structure,the thesis divides it into lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.As for lexical level,the author divides it into two parts: terms and changing dynamic words into static words.According to different terms,the translator adopts different translation strategies.From syntactic level,the thesis contrasts the culture and thinking pattern as well as language users habits of TL and SL.With regard to it,the translator tries to build some relation by using optimal relevance after finding out the similarities and differences of two countries.From the textual level,the translator takes the whole text into consideration when translating.The translator should infer original author's communicative intention from the text.Finally,the author makes a summary on translation cases.Through translation practice,the author realizes the role of the translator during translating and knows how to seek for optimal relevance from words.In addition,the translator knows how to save processing efforts to get the maximal communicative information.In addition,this practice report shows strong practicability of the translation of popular science text from perspective of relevance theory.
