The middle-late Dawenkou culture has been considered critical to the evolution of social complexity in Haidai Region.The goblets,as the most typical pottery of this period,will be examined as one perspective to understand the distribution of social power based on several sites or cemeteries including Lingyanghe,Dawenkou and Jiaojia.This dissertation consists of the following parts:Introduction.Temporal and spatial framework will be determined in this part,along with a review of the preceding researches on drinking vessels,obsequies and society of Dawenkou culture.This part also focuses on the discoveries of goblets in this area.In addition,the objective and methods of this dissertation are addressed.Chapter 1.This part begins with the analysis on the drinking vessels from Lingyanghe site.Spatial distribution of the cemetery and inner space of some typical burials are analyzed,after which a preliminary investigation on the occupants with goblets as funerary objects will be made.Chapter 2.The drinking vessels from Dawenkou cemetery are studied in this chapter,followed by the analysis on spatial distribution and inner space of some typical burials.A preliminary investigation on the occupants will be undertaken at the end.Chapter 3.The study on the drinking vessels from Jiaojia cemetery makes up the first part of this chapter.The same analysis,including spatial distribution and inner space of those burials as well as the discussion on the occupants with goblets buried together will be completed.Chapter 4.Certain numbers of goblets and cups unearthed from the burials of Dawenkou culture at Jiaojia site in 2016 are chosen for residual analysis experiments,which intends to confirm the function of these ceramic vessels as implements for alcoholic beverage.Chapter 5.Burial ritual and social power.A comparison on both periodic and regional characteristics in terms of social power evolution will be made in this chapter,based on the discoveries of drinking vessels as funerary objects.Conclusion.Summary of this dissertation,followed by the deficiency.
