On Simultaneous Interpreting Strategies Of Live Webcast Gaming Conventions From The Perspective Of Audience Theory

With the advantages of Internet technology,webcasting is fast,wide-spread,and interactive.Many major international events adopt webcasting to expand their influence on communications.Under this trend,a growing number of overseas programs use Chinese simultaneous interpretation to meet the needs of Chinese users.Live webcast gaming conventions have emerged as a domain of interest with an audience of hundreds of millions of Chinese game players.From an interdisciplinary perspective of the Audience Theory,this paper chooses the opening ceremonies of the 2015,2016,and 2017 BlizzCons as cases for study,and collects instant comments made by netizen viewers during the live webcast on Bilibili.Through the observation and analysis of 339 comments on simultaneous interpreting,this paper gains inspiring insight into the characteristics and needs of the audience of live gaming conventions.This paper finds out that the netizen audience of game shows is a fan audience.Because of their own features,they have higher expectation on the interpreter's delivery quality,voice,and professional ethics.Thus,the paper advices five strategies:preparing referential materials,conducting mock simultaneous interpretation,receiving targeted voice training,ensuring coordination and division of labor with co-interpreters,and looking into the needs of the audience.I hope that this study can provide effective suggestions for simultaneous interpreters of live webcast gaming shows and inspiration for future studies.
