Factors Influencing The Choice Of Strategies For Translating Metaphors In Reports To The CPC National Congress

With China's rapid development,the Chinese government's policies attract wide attention around the world.This poses new challenges to the translation of policy texts.One of the prominent features of the Chinese version of the report to the 19th CPC National Congress is that it uses a lot of vivid metaphors like "tiger hunting",which poses great challenges to translators.A lot of researches have been done about the translation of the reports to the 17th and 18th CPC National Congress but few look into the translation of metaphors.Meanwhile,the report to the 19th CPC National Congress was just released at the time of writing,so even fewer researchers explored this particular text.This thesis includes qualitative and quantitative analysis of the English translation of the three reports from the perspective of cognitive metaphor.The author explores the following research questions:Are strategies for translating metaphors in the three reports the same?If not,what are some possible factors causing the inconsistency?The author discovers that the number of metaphors in both the original text and translation of the report to the 19th CPC National Congress is much larger than those of the previous two reports.The analysis of strategies used to translate metaphors in the three reports reveals that although "maintaining the original vehicle of the metaphor" is still the mostly used strategy in the 19th National Congress report,just like the previous two reports,the current strategy choice does seem to have diversified.Based on the author's observation and analysis of the translation of the three reports,the author summarizes the tentative factors that influence the translation of metaphors,which are the possible factors influencing the choice of strategy to translate metaphors in these reports.These factors include the originality of the metaphor,cultural overlap,the special features of political text,cohesion within text,cohesion between text and other factors.
