A Study On Chinese-English Translation Of Conceptual Metaphor In The Report At The 19th CPC National Congress From Functional Equivalence Perspective

Conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff is often applied to the analysis of American political discourse by American scholars.There are also domestic studies on conceptual metaphor in Chinese political discourse.These scholars try to establish a metaphorical system with Chinese characteristics.However,the author notices that there is still a lack of study on the Chinese-English translation of conceptual metaphor in Chinese political texts.In view of this,this thesis studies the English translation of conceptual metaphor in the report at the 19 th CPC National Congress,and tries to explore the English translation methods of conceptual metaphor and the rule and features in order to provide some reference for the publicity translation of Chinese political discourse.The research objects of this thesis are the report at the 19th CPC National Congress and its authoritative English version for external publicity.This thesis tries to analyze the English translation methods of conceptual metaphor in the report based on Lakoff's conceptual metaphor theory and Nida's functional equivalence theory.The research process is as follows.Firstly,based on the literature review and brief introduction of functional equivalence theory,conceptual metaphor and researches on English translation of the report;the author will discuss the guiding role of functional equivalence on conceptual metaphor translation and the specific conceptual metaphor translation methods to provide feasibility for the study.Secondly,based on the background information and the language features of the report,the author will explore the conceptual metaphor's features,mechanism,function and identification principle in the report to make the study normative and scientific.At last,based on the statistics of metaphors in the report,and according to the semantic features and conceptual categories in Chinese of the source domains of metaphors,the author will summarize more than ten types of conceptual metaphor,including three types of conceptual metaphor with the highest frequency,i.e.“??”metaphor,“???”metaphor and“??”metaphor.Addtionally,four conceptual metaphor translation methods,i.e.recurrence,replacement,emphasis and ellipsis reflected in the English translation of the three types of conceptual metaphor are analyzed.The study shows that there is a certain rule of the four translation methods in the Chinese-English translation of the three types of conceptual metaphor.The rule is that recurrence and ellipsis methods are the most embodied,while the replacement and emphasis methods are relatively less.Meanwhile,the four conceptual metaphor translation methods form their own characteristics in the Chinese-English translation of the three types of conceptual metaphor.The application of the four conceptual metaphor translation methods not only retains the original taste of the report,but also makes the translation be accordant with the target readers language habits to make the target readers have the similar response to the original readers' and realize the functional equivalence.The research findings from this study have certain potential to the unformed English translation study of conceptual metaphor in Chinese political discourse.The specific examples and data could be helpful to the future establishment of the corpus.Meanwhile,the author hopes that this study can contribute to better publicity of the spirit of the 19 th CPC National Congress and provide translators of external publicity with some instruction and reference.
