The present report discusses translation strategies within the framework of register theory. It is based on the author's own translation of the publicity materials selected from the website of Merlin Entertainments Group and aims to emphasize the importance of register analysis in the process of translation and the importance of representing the register of source text in the target text.Register is defined as a variety of language according to its use in social situations,a sort of functional variety of discourse in the specific communicative context for certain practical purpose.According to Halliday, register consists of field, tenor and mode.Field is concerned with such situational factors as the subject matter and the setting.Tenor covers the roles and relationships of the participants that are realized in a communication.Mode denotes the medium or channel in which the language is transmitted. They determine the selection of words and phrases and the linguistic form of contents together. The author holds that the text types of the selected materials are informative and operative as far as the text types are concerned.Markers of informativeness and operativeness represent themselves at the lexical and the syntactical level.Based on the text types of the source text, this report has discussed the importance of taking field, tenor and mode into consideration in the course of translation, and has illustrated how to maintain the genre of the source text in the target text.In order to represent the original genre properly both at the lexical and the syntactic levels the author has employed lexical accommodation such as back translation, omission, substitution and others at the level of lexical translation, and has employed syntactic accommodation at the level of sentence translation such as rewriting, amplification, splitting and rearranging sentence order. The final section of this report is a conclusion where the author reemphasizes the importance of register analysis in the process of translation and the importance of representing the register of source text in the target text. The author points out that different types of text require different translation strategies, the three elements of register, namely, field, mode and tenor, should be taken into consideration simultaneously when doing translation so that the target text could have the same effect on its reader.
