Food and drinks are the most essential activity in all things that humans share.Research on diets has always been an important topic in the study of cultural anthropology.In the field of mass communication,diets is often used as a symbol in all kinds of film and television works,becoming a carrier of narrative,or a representation of emotional and cultural connotations.As a country where dietary culture prevails,there are many dietary-related works in China and Japan.While these works successfully attract the attention of the audience,they also allow more and more people to understand the dietary culture with Chinese and Japanese characteristics.Based on this research background,this article selects the representative dietary TV series "Midnight Diner" as the research object and analyzes the dietary symbols of the two TV series works.In the aspect of denotation,this article analyzes the features of the dietary symbols in the two editions both in art and culture.In the aspect of connotation,this paper adopts the semiotics to interpret the significance and cultural cores of dietary symbols in the TV series.Based on the analysis of the representation of dietary symbols in the two TV series,the study further investigated the identifications of Chinese and Japanese audiences on the two editions of the "Midnight Diner" and the dietary symbols in the plays through questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews.The results show that Chinese and Japanese audiences differ greatly in identifications towards the different dietary symbols in the two TV series.The Japanese edition of "Midnight Diner" got a significantly higher score in cultural identity,while the Chinese edition got a lower score.In the end,the research summarized the problems existing in the creation and development of Chinese dietary TV series,and put forward specific suggestions for the healthy development of China's dietary TV series.
