Recently years,spy stories are in great demand both in TVs and cinemas.In2009,with the shown of <The message>、<QiuXi>etc.These lead to a stirring ofwatching spy movies and spy movies had taken some market shares of Chinesemovies in a short time.American people also prefer to spy stories.In long termpractices,Hollywood has evolved own patterns to produce spy movies,and won globemarket with a series of high quality spy movies.Chinese and American spy movies are rooted in different social and culturalenvironments,which lead to different value orientations of communication.Spymovies focus on special experiences of spies.So characters are the soul of themovie.Value orientations of the movie are reflected by characters’words、behaviors、personalities and minds.So, to make a comparative study of character images in spymovies between China and America is of great importance to find differences of theirvalue orientations of communication.This paper focus on character images in typical contemporary spy movies ofChina and America.Use comparative analysis on different kinds of character imagesto explore their differences.Then choose the Hong Kong film <Infernal Affairs> andthe America film <The Departed> as a case of study to compare techniques ofexpression in characterization.Then,make a comparison between value orientations ofChinese-US spy movies with communication theories.At last,according to Chinesespy movies’present problems,this paper tries to make reasonable suggestions in arational way to help it to get better development and realize its values in the future.
