A Report On The Translation Of Figures Of Speech Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

In China,the earliest systematic study of figures of speech began when Chinese rhetoric and Western rhetoric combined.The most influential book is Chen Wangdao's An Introduction to Rhetoric.The book made a serious discussion of the term—figures of speech,and this book has been widely regarded as a representative work in the field of figures of speech.In the past two decades,Chinese scholars have made many achievements in the study of figures of speech and also studied the use of figures of speech from different perspectives and different genres.Compared with Western countries,there have been many academic papers and journals that have studied figures of speech in China.Among them,we can also find many papers or periodicals focus on the comparison of Chinese rhetoric and Western rhetoric,and there is little research on how to translate figures of speech.Therefore,this practice report will focus on the translation of figures of speech.This translation practice report intends to introduce,analyze and summarize the translation process and the completion of the first two chapters of the novel The Ring.The Ring is a novel by American famous romantic novelist Daniel Steel.The novel is mainly about the emotional entanglement of the parents,the ups and downs as well as the emotional journey of their future generations.When translating the first two chapters,the translator found many uses of figures of speech.Due to the cultural differences between China and the West,how to translate these figures of speech and how to convey the same effect are the dilemmas.Because of these mentioned problems,the translator decides to employ Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory to guide the translation of the figures of speech in the first two chapters of the novel.The reason why the theory of communicative translation is adopted is that it is difficult to achieve the equivalence of meaning and function in semantic translation by reviewing the effect of the translation of figures of speech.Only communicative translation can make up for the disadvantages of semantic translation.After all,the main content of communicative translation theory is to produce the same effects for the target language readers as the source language readers.
