With the basis of Darwin's adaptation and selection theory,Professor Hu Gengshen put forward an Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection in 2001,and made a comprehensive discussion about the phenomenon of adaptation and selection in translation process from the translator-oriented perspective, reaching the fundamental idea of translation as adaptation and selection.Previous studies of translation as adaptation and selection are most applied in the analysis of governmental and travelling materials. On the basis of a detailed analysis of the expression habit, linguistic features and cultural differences in Jill, the author intends to complete the translation with the guidance of translation as adaptation and selection. The source text material is excerpted from Philip Larkin's novel Jill, and there is yet no Chinese version of this novel,so the author chooses to make a translation research on the 10000 words selected from over 30000 words in her translation practice.Under the guidance of the core concept of translation as adaptation and selection, this report conducts an analysis on the translation difficulties and obstacles from linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, combining with some specific translation methods, such as conversion, adaptation, annotation, literal translation, amplification and free translation. The ultimate aim of this report is to adopt translation adaptation and selection theory to guide novel translation and to provide a new translation strategy for literature translation, while at the same time, the target readers can get a deep understanding about Philip Larkin and his works.
