The American writer Don Delillo is regarded as one of the best novelists of the time. The publication of White Noise laid his unique position in literary world. As is well known,White Noise is a masterpiece. When it was first published,it acquired the American Literature Awards, the ‘National Book Award'.This work has always been regarded as a classic literary work echoing the situation of modern people. It tells about the panic and discomfort after a chemical leak accident. In the novel,Don Delillo gave readers a picture of postmodern life in the United States, which enables readers to understand the natural environment and people's mental states of American society.Among them, the alient consumption psychology of people, the mass media's various advocacy and the lack of religious belief of the whole nation bring out that the biggest crisis of mankind is their fear of death. The protagonist Jack is a microcosm of most people.Through a detailed description of his vivid fear of death and futile resistance, readers could understand and try to figure out the contemporary Americans' consciousness to death and self survival condition. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is an introduction, mainly introduces Don Delillo, his works and Realism, the research background, research significance and research problem etc.The second part is the main body of the thesis. This part consists of three chapters. The first chapter is the analysis of human ethics in White Noise from the perspective of Realism. In this chapter, the thesis analyzes the ethical relationship between Jack and Heinrich, the ethical relationship between Jack and Babette, and the ethical relationship between Jack and Murray. These ethical relations will be analysed from the perspective of Realism after explaining the three pairs of ethical relations. The reason why firstly introduce the ethical relationship between Jack and Heinrich is that in Jack's mind, the most important thing is his child and then his wife, the last is his colleague. The second chapter is the analysis of human confusion of White Noise from the perspective of Realism. In this chapter, the confusion of Heinrich,Jack Gladney, andBabette Gladney will be analysed.Certainly, reasons and performances of their confusion will also be analysed from the perspective of Realism. The reason of their confusion not only has relations with their own character, but also has some relations with the development of American society in the post industrial era.The third chapter is the analysis of the return of humanity of White Noise from the perspective of Realism. This section also includes three chapters. They are the return of life rule of human body, the return of human kindness and the return of the standard of value judgment.Jack,Babette and Heinrich need both the return of life rule of human body and the return of the standard of value judgment. The third part is the summary.Through the analysis above,it's clear that realistic literature still has important literary value in post-modern society. The study of this book has always been focused on postmodernism, collective unconsciousness, consumerism and so on.Few scholars have analyzed it from Realism. And as a post-modern work,White Noise has many realistic features.Hoping that this thesis will provide a new perspective to interpret White Noise, and readers could have a comprehensive understanding to the novel.
