| In order to solve the problems of grammar learning difficulties for students in our country and losing some scores on the grammar part, the author tries to use the Iconic Principles under the theory of cognitive linguistics to teach grammar in order to solve the above problems.Iconicity is equivalent to motivationality. That is,there should be some reasons behind the linguistic phenomenon.Nowadays, students have to recite the grammar rules to learn, which leads to grammar learning difficulties. These problems are necessary to be solved. The author uses the Iconic Principles to explain the grammar items and tells students the rationale behind it,which helps students understand grammar items. Some researchers have applied this theory to college students, who have proved its feasibility and effectiveness. However, few researchers have focused on middle school students, such as high school students and junior high school students. Therefore, the author identifies the research subjects as junior high school students. In addition, there are many researches on the application of the Iconic Principles in grammar teaching. There are a good many researches of its theoretical discussions, but there are relatively few empirical studies. This study is an empirical study and expanded on the basis of previous studies. The study combines the Iconic Principles with the teaching of junior high school English grammar to verify whether this teaching method can improve students’ grammatical competence. That means, whether it can help students understand grammatical structures and improve students’ grammar performance. It will answer the following research questions.1.When the author is teaching the junior high school English Grammar, how can she help students understand the grammatical structures? And can it help students understand the grammatical structures when the teacher applies the Iconic Principles to explain grammatical structures? 2.Does the combination of iconicity and grammar teaching methods effectively improve students’ grammar scores? 3.What is the students’ attitude toward recognition of the teaching method? This study conducts interviews, questionnaire surveys, and language tests on 50 experimental subjects in the eighth grade of Banan Middle School in Chongqing. The results of the study are as follows: First, through the author’s three-month experimental study,it is proved that the Iconic Principles can be used to explain grammatical phenomena to help students understand grammatical structures.Second, the author finds that students’ grammar performance is improved because the author adopts the Iconic Principles, but the effect is not so obvious, which is nothing to do with the method adopted but the short duration and somestudents’ poor grammar competence.Third, among students, the students’ attitude toward recognition of the teaching method is inconsistent. For example, the number of people who agree is more than that of people who disagree, and some students hold the neutral attitude. And the holders of different attitudes have different reasons. The author infiltrates theoretical knowledge of the Iconic Principles into the practice of grammar teaching, which can help students understand and memorize grammar rules from a new perspective, reduce the time for students’ cognitive processing, and improve the achievement and grammar learning effect of some students. At the same time,it also helps students improve their recognition of the method and makes grammar teaching more intuitive. This study is a combination of qualitative and quantitative empirical research, supplementing on the basis of the previous studies, and owning certain theoretical and practical significance, and researching value. |
