Conceptual Integration Theory, also known as Conceptual Blending Theory finds its roots in Conceptual Metaphor and Mental Space.Conceptual Integration Theory utilizes mental spaces as basic units which are projected and integrated into a new blending space. Two of the leading names in this field,Fauconnier and Tunner, have proposed that a complete conceptual integration network should include four mental spaces for categorisation,Input Space I,Input Space II,Generic Space and Blending Space. Each Input Space contains elements crucial to its construction. The elements in these two Input Spaces can conduct cross-space mapping. There may exist different frames and elements in these two Input Spaces. This means that different conceptual integration networks can arise, namely:Simplex Network,Mirror Network,One-scope Network and Double-scope Network.Similar elements in Input Spaces can project into Generic Space and all of the elements can project into the Blending Space. After the process of composition, completion and elaboration, emergent structures are generated in the Blending Space. This entire process is what leads to meaning construction. This thesis studies the translation process from the standpoint of Conceptual Integration Theory and uses this method to analyze the transferring of pragmatic effect during the translation process. It employs documentary studies, descriptive studies and case studies to analyze the transferring of pragmatic effect during the translation process.13 political euphemisms are selected from Xi Jinping:The Governance of China(2014)and its corresponding English translation. This thesis finds that translating political euphemism in Xi Jinping:The governance of China is divided into two phases:Phase 1 is the process of understanding the source text's underlying meaning;in Phase 2,source text and target language are the two categories of Input Space.Pragmatic elements, cultural differences and other elements are projected into the blending space to produce the emergent structure of the target text, namely the English versions of political euphemism in Xi Jinping:The Governance of China. This paper analyzes the reappearance of pragmatic effects in the process of translating political euphemism, through the theory of Conceptual Integration. It expands the current research body using Conceptual Integration Theory and applies a new theoretical perspective for political euphemism study, using Xi Jinping's work.
