The Study Of Fletcher's Situation Ethical Thought

With the development of modern society,the invention and creation of science and technology,the life situation of people becomes more and more complex.However,the existing moral theories become weaker and weaker in solving many problems today.It is in such situation that Fletcher put forward a set of theoretical solutions to this life which is short of traditional ethics,namely,Situation Ethics.The situation ethics' correction of life depends on the popularity of its ethical thoughts.Therefore,it is necessary to probe into the popularity of Situation Ethics,and the theoretical background would be the first step.And to investigate the formation of Fletcher's thought,it is inevitable to consider the important experiences of three stages in his life: the family misfortune in earlier life,the enlightenment education in middle school and all the teaching experiences in later life,which laid a ideological foundation for the formation of his theory.On the macro level,the political transformation,the rapid development of science and technology,and the change of society morality in Fletcher's times laid a realistic foundation for the formation of the situation ethics.From the perspective of cultural origin,both American philosophy and Christian theology laid a theoretical foundation for the formation of theory.When comes to the study of ideological content of Fletcher's situation ethics,it includes four practical principles: practical principle,relativism,positivism and personality supremacy,which are theoretical foundation of situation ethics.Based on these four principles,he put forward six basic proposition of situation ethics: love is the only eternal kindness,love is the only standard,love is not likeness,love is one thing to justify the legitimacy of,love with justice means love and make a decision then and there,which constitute the core idea of situation ethics.The thought principle of situation ethics can be extracted from these six basic propositions—— adhering to the person's dominant status,love is the only action guidelines and requirements when one make a decision.The place where Fletcher discovered truth is the place where he lost the truth,so the value of his theory show its limitation and shortcomings.Therefore,from the aspects of gains and losings,Fletcher's situation ethics provided a diversified reference and inspiration for the development of ethics in China.
