Spiritual Ecology Of The Characters In Nine Stories

Jerome David Salinger' Nine Stories,published in 1953 is a collection of nine Salinger's short stories chosen by Salinger himself.It is Salinger's second representative work after the great success of The Catcher in the Rye.Those nine stories are all Salinger's thinking on the Second World War that brought great changes to the world.The two world wars during the last century have brought enormous destructions not only to the natural world but also the human society.And people's psychological sufferings and pains from the wars are much more severe than their physical injuries.To some extent,all the main characters in Nine Stories are spiritually "abnormal" in different ways.This thesis attempts to advance the research on the analysis of the characters'psychological problems in Nine Stories from the perspective of spiritual ecology.The main body of this thesis consists of five parts:the introduction part,three chapters and the conclusion part.The introduction part gives a general view of Salinger's life and his writings,and the reviews of the latest research achievements of the criticism on Nine Stories.Also,the spiritual ecological theory and the research significance and purpose from this perspective is presented.The three chapters respectively presents the main symptoms,causes and solutions of the characters' spiritual ecological crisis in Nine Stories based on the spiritual ecological theory.From a detailed analysis of the characters' spiritual ecology in Nine Stories,we can have a better knowledge of Americans',mental state after WW ?.Their spiritual crisis are reflections of the mental conditions of Americans and even people all over the world after the two big wars.People were all living under great spiritual pressure and anxieties at that period,having lost their life goals and directions.To get the final harmony between human and nature,human and human,human and their inner hearts is the key to solve human's spiritual problems.
