As an important part of learning strategies of second language,reading strategies are the methods that readers use to achieve reading goals consciously and flexibly.Using reading strategies properly can improve the efficiency of reading so that more and more scholars have made further studies recently.However,comparing with researches of other language skills,on the one hand,domestic researches of Chinese reading strategies start later and most are about Thai students,Korean students or Japanese students,few about Indonesian students.On the other hand,most current researches study the relationship between reading level and reading strategies repeatedly and few investigate that between the individual factors,such as gender,and reading strategies.And the number of researches about how to improve overseas students reading ability or reading performance by using strategies correctly,which is also the purpose of most Indonesian students to learn more about reading strategies is small.In view of the importance of reading strategies,the research status of Indonesian students Chinese reading strategies,the personalities of Indonesian students as well as their requirements of reading strategies,I carry out a empirical study about the reading strategies of Indonesian students studying in China.I investigated 81 Indonesian students studying in Overseas Education College,Xiamen University by questionnaire and individual interview.Then I analysed how do they use the reading strategies by Descriptive Analysis and found out the individual factors that influence their use of reading strategies by T-test and ANOVA.What's more,discussing the effects of reading strategies on reading performance by Relevance Analysis was carried out.Finally,I summarized the types of reading strategies that can improve their reading performance.The conclusion of this research are as follows.Firstly,from the perspective of Indonesian students use of reading strategies,they use all the six types of reading strategies and the compensation strategy is of highest frequency.However,all the six strategies don't reach ideal degree.Secondly,from the perspective of Indonesian students' individual differences,Age and foreign citizen of Chinese origin affect the use of affective strategy while the time of reading weekly affects the use of memory strategy.What's more,reading level affects many reading strategies except the metacognitive strategy.These prove that the training of reading strategies need to be combined with the individual characteristics of students.Thirdly,from the perspective of the relativity between reading strategies and reading performance,all the reading strategies are positive with reading performance except the metacognitive strategy.This illustrates that Indonesian students will get a higher score when they use these kinds of reading strategies more often.Fourth,the individual interview shows that there are five main difficulties in Indonesian students' reading,such as the lack of vocabulary and reading slowly.And it also shows that the Indonesian students use all the types of reading strategies in order to solve these difficulties.What kinds of reading strategies they use are corresponded with the result of questionnaire.All the students investigated think that Chinese teachers' guidance and training of reading strategies are very important and they hope teachers can explain how to use reading strategy pertinently.Finally,depending on the analyses of questionnaire and individual interview,I propound for the tutoring of Indonesian students' Chinese reading strategies.
