This thesis takes Mozart's Requiem in D minor as the research object.Through analyzing the musical technique and form,it attempts to summarize the musical style of the unfinished work by Mozart, and demonstrates the point that the Requiem, being one of the most important pieces by Mozart,is a comprehensive expression of his achievement in religious music. This thesis includes three chapters. The first chapter introduces the history of the requiem as a music genre, the social environment relating to Mozart while composing the piece, his religious belief, his Masonic experience, and legends of the piece. The second chapter demonstrates the value of the music through analyzing the structure and themes of each of the movements from the Requiem, the handling of the instrumental melody, the arrangement of thematic material, and the interactive relationship between vocal and instrumental lines. The third chapter elucidates Mozart's depiction of religious belief and theology as well as his exploration of human nature through analyzing the rhetoric device in the piece.
