A Preliminary Discussion On Norman Rockwell's Illustration Art

Illustration is a type of painting that gains great popularity and appears in magazines,books and advertisings which appear to us very often in daily life.Unlike the pure art which expresses the emotion of painter in a direct way,illustration is strongly commercial so that it has never a high social position in people's mind because of the limitations in creation.As a type of painting,the artistic value of illustration not only depends on the pursuit and level of the painter but also the aesthetics and requirement of the editor.The major research object of this thesis is the artistry of illustration.On the basis of analyzing the differences between two types of painting,illustration and pure art,this thesis further explores the influence of the era on the works of Norman Rockwell.In addition,given a deep understanding of the era circumstance,the author analyzes the reason for the popularity of his works by examples,and how he expressed his artistry in theme and skill.At last,the author also compares Norman Rockwell with the other two excellent illustrators of the same era and comes to the final conclusions.The author chooses Norman Rockwell,an important American illustrator in the early20^th century who gained the popularity among American people in his study of artistry in illustration.His works are very typical.His realistic approach,high skills and conscientious attitude were not only popular in his era but also exerted deep influence on the descendants.His works also inspire the author who is a painting learner.
