Norman Rockwell(February 3,1894--November 8,1978)was one of the most iconic American illustrators of the 20th century. In his illustrations, the images of children play different roles in society and family to convey a rich message. The research on children's images in Rockwell's illustrations should be organized from concrete to abstract.Firstly,Rockwell is set in the background of the golden age of American illustration, and the artistic style and characteristics of Rockwell in different stages are discussed based on the growth experience and artistic career of the artist.Secondly,it classifies children's images and discusses the categories of children's images in Rockwell's illustrations, and summarizes the artist's view of children. On the basis of the research in the first two chapters, this paper uses the semiotic principle to summarize and analyze the three types of children's image symbols in Rockwell's illustrations, which are educational symbols, family symbols and true symbols, and explores the unique meanings of different children's image symbols. Finally, combined with the above research foundation and the unique cultural background of the 20th century in the United States, this paper explores the important value of children's images in Rockwell's illustrations.Various images of children can not only reflect the artist's creative motivation and emotional orientation, but also reflect the social spirit of a country.Through the induction and analysis of children's images in Rockwell's illustrations, the paper explores the signifier and signification of children's image symbols from the perspective of semiotics. At the same time,it analyzes the deep meaning and value of children's image.
