In the late Qing Dynasty,Women's Penitentiary was a charitable institution transplanted from the west to relieve the women of prostitution and made it started.It firstly appeared in Shanghai and was founded by foreign missionaries,and many cities in China followed suit.In the period of The Republic of China,Women's Penitentiary was further developed,not only in quantity but also in scale,and the related system gradually improved.On the rescue object,Women's Penitentiary in Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas had been abducted,abused,destitute,among other women.The scope of the rescue was more extensive.In terms of management,before 1928,Women's Penitentiary in Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas was established by the police department.After 1928,most of Women's Penitentiary's reorganization was incorporated into the relief courtyard,which was replaced by the women's relief institute and the women's education institute.There were strict rules and regulations in the inner city of Women's Penitentiary.On the source of funds,Women's Penitentiary in Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas mainly had relied on government subsidies,matrimonial payment,and social donation,while also spending on business expenses and equipment costs.In terms of female outlet,marriage was the most common choice,and had the corresponding rules.The emergence of Women's Penitentiary had a certain progressive,which not only promoted the emancipation of prostitutes themselves,but also promoted the development of society.However,due to the shortage of funds and management,Women's Penitentiary had many disadvantages.The practice of good related situation in Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas during the period of The Republic of China,hopes to provide history lessons,in order to promote the perfection of our social relief system in China,so as to help more prostitutes.
