With increasingly frequent intercultural communication,Chinese culture “going out”becomes a national strategy and translation is the inevitable way to realize it.In 2012,Mo Yan has won Nobel Prize with the translation work--Big Breasts & Wide Hips of his masterpiece--Fengru Feitun, which provides a model for other literary works internationalization. This thesis aims to analyze Howard Goldblatt's translation strategies at lexical, syntactic and discourse level in Big Breasts&Wide Hips from three aspects of reception aesthetics, with horizon of expectation, text's response-inviting structure and the translator's subjectivity included, expecting to provide some suggestions for translation of Chinese literary masterpieces in the future.Reception aesthetics, put forward by Iser and Jauss in the late 1960's,is established on Hermeneutics and Phenomenology and regards readers as the center in translation, which is contrary to both text-centered and author-centered translation theories. Moreover, reception aesthetics pays more attention to the text's social effects and readers' horizon. This thesis illustrates translation at lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level in Big Breasts& Wide Hips to attain the revelation on literary translation.Basically, the essence of translation lies in readers' understanding and reception of it.In the process of translation, two times of language-reception happen: the interpreter's reception of the original text and target-language readers' reception of the translated text.Apparently,Howard Goldblatt has put readers' role in a dominant position and employed specific strategies in translation.Flexibly played the subjectivity of the translator,Goldbaltt has accomplished the fusion of horizon between the original and the translator as well as between targeted readers and the translation version.
