Chinese Haiku,a new genre of poetry in modern China, was originally born to imitate Japanese Haiku in 1980 s.At present, however,it lacks the fixed principles and aesthetic essence.According to these problems,we firstly take a brief look at the history and relationship between the two poetic genres, and use the theory of Variation to make it clear that Chinese Haiku is an initial variation of Japanese Haiku, which refers that the key purpose of it is to show the fascinating meaning of original Haiku by Chinese words.Based on the definition,we can analyze the deficiencies of Chinese Haiku specifically in pronunciation, form and content. In pronunciation, there is a huge discrepancy between Japanese syllables and Chinese words, which certainly leads Chinese Haiku become much more long, opposing the natural and condensation of Japanese Haiku. In form,Japanese Haiku only has one line with perfect coherence. But the Chinses splitting line has cut off the consistent beauty. In content, most Chinese Haiku works lack aesthetic essence as Japanese Haiku. That means they ignore the concept “Sabi”,“Shiori”,a sincere and natural feelings and a sudden growth.Nevertheless, many writers do not catch the key point of Japanese Haiku, and cannot tell the boundary between Japanese Haiku,Chinese Haiku and native Chinese poetry. What they write are just the eccentric and inappropriate complex poets. Finally,we try to modify Chinese Haiku with the advantages of the Imagism’s assertions.Ezra Pound, the famous imagist, proposed the method “super-position” inspired by Japanese Haiku, and wrote the well-known In a Station at the Metro, which are correctly related to a view held by Kawamoto,a Japanese scholar, that original Haiku constitutes of “Base Part” and “Inference Part”.This discovery has proved that Japanese Haiku is truly formed by 2 parts in meaning rather than 3 parts. Therefore,we have obtained a new way to modify Chinese Haiku by deleting the words and changing the pauses. In addition,we can put the image directly, ellipse metaphoric words, use the condensation and suggestion, and so on in rhetorical devices.By these approaches,we sincerely hope to take a further step for creating better Chinese Haiku works.
