Exploration Of Haiku Translation Strategy Under The Guidance Of Function Translation Theory

Haiku,which originated in Japan,is a fixed verse composed of 17 pseudonyms with the form of “Five-Seven-Five”.Considered to be the shortest fixed verse in the world.As Japan's fixed verse,the translation form of haiku is not yet unified in China.In the field of translation studies,it has always been a controversial topic about how to translate so as to fully embody the characteristics of Haiku—the Japanese poetry with unique language structures.Many experts have proposed and proved the feasibility of translating it into the form of regulated verse,a kind of traditional Chinese poem of four or eight lines,in which each contains five or seven characters with a strict tonal pattern and rhyme scheme.While,some scholars have offered to translate Haiku in vernacular Chinese.Based on previous researches,the thesis explores the translation forms of Haiku.After analyzing four scholars' Chinese translation of Haiku,Lin lin,Li mang,Chen Derun,and Zheng Minqin,the thesis proves the importance of form in translation under the instruction of Kreiss and Node's text type theory in the functional translation theory,and demonstrates the rationality & operability through practising “Three-Five-Three” form in Haiku translation.For vocabulary translation of Haiku,under the guidance of “loyalty and function” in German Functionalism theory,the thesis offered a detailed case study of Haiku translation.Typically aiming at representative vocabulary in Haiku,the following seven kinds of translation strategies are summed up and also proved for its feasibility through practice: 1)addition of implicative information,2)simplification of noun imagery,3)omission of the original poem images,4)direct translation of imagery,5)equivalent rewrite of information,6)literal translation plus annotation,7)the processing of punctuation.
