The expressionistic aesthetics pioneered by Benedetto Croce is one of the most important modern aesthetics in the 20 th century.Croce has certainly assured that the intuition has an exceeding authority position in the process of cognition. While establishing spiritual philosophy,he has also deepened the irrational tendency and mysticism of western aesthetics research.R.G.Collingwood is the culmination of Croce's expressionist aesthetics. His mature view of art was presented in the later book The Principles of Art.This paper will conduct an in-depth and systematic study of it.The first chapter of this paper mainly tracks Collingwood's academic perspectives on the views of literature and art.Collingwood?s view on art learnt widely from other?s strong points.Based on inheriting Croce's expressionist aesthetic theories,he has also been widely absorbed in German classic aesthetics(Kant,Hegel),romantic aesthetics(Cole law),and British traditional empiricism, etc. Therefore, their thinking trains of demonstrations, ways of thinking, and their conclusions are mostly different from Croce. The second chapter is the core part of this paper, which is divided into four parts.First of all,Collingwood has teased the history of the development of the art concepts. As we all know, analyzing the artistic skills theory has caused the art of witchcraft and entertainment to be mistaken for true art for a long time. This part is mainly tells the cleaning up of the concepts confusion of art caused by Collingwood.Secondly,Collingwood takes performance, imagination and languages as the core elements. It specifically states that art is an emotional expression,a kind of imaginative experience.Art is the language, vividly outlining the psychological mechanism and the process of explicitness, also clearing the connotation of emotional expression and the specific process of art formation.Thirdly,he summarized the shortcomings of the romanticism movement and the artistic autonomy movement for the arts.He attacked the aesthetic individualism which had turned the so-called art into a narrow ivory tower art.The aesthetic had become the vent or the personal emotions expression.Collingwood thinks that art should be oriented to society, and artists should sing for the audience.Art is not only conducive to the formation of individual cognitive experiences, but also promotes the cooperation and communication between groups, even in the era of consumption or the era of popular culture, art should be a good medicine for rescuing social morality and civilization. Finally,it is a summary of the core parts of Collingwood's view of literature and art, including its theoretical features and the limited reflection. This paper thinks that Collingwood's views on literature and art is plausible in some degree, but he has corrected the extreme irrational tendency created by Croce, which has injected rational ingredients for the aesthetics of expressionism, and perfects the expressionist aesthetics. The third chapter is a deeper thinking on the theoretical impact of Collingwood's views of literature and art, focusing on the value of its theory to the subsequent aesthetic and artistic theory. This paper believes that Collingwood's views of literature and art is more moderate and reasonable,so it is more easily used by other modern schools of thought, such as Susan Lange's semiotic theory and so on.In short,Collingwood?s views on literature and art have a lasting vitality, and its positive significance cannot be ignored.
