With the rapid development of globalization,English has become the most widely used language in the world.As an English teacher in primary and secondary schools,the quality of English education can be guaranteed only by improving the level of teaching competence to meet the needs of the new era.In this study,a questionnaire survey was conducted on 1333 primary and secondary school English teachers in 11 districts of Jiangxi province.The following conclusions were drawn through the analysis of the survey data.(1)The overall performance of English teachers' teaching competence in primary and secondary schools is close to the better level,but there is a weak link.The average teaching competence of English teachers in primary and secondary schools is 4.63,which is close to the better level.From the first index,knowledge literacy is 4.23,teaching ability is 4.77,professional quality is 4.75,and personal characteristics is 4.77,among which teaching ability,professional character and personal characteristics reach a good level,and knowledge literacy is quite different.From the second index,7 of the 11 indexes were more than 4.5,while the scores of educational knowledge,general knowledge,professional emotion and self characteristics were low.From the three third index,the lower scores are teacher-student interaction,career planning,self-regulation and psychological state.(2)The teaching competence level of English teachers from different primary and secondary school is different.From the area,The rank as follows: Jingdezhen,Pingxiang,Ganzhou,Fuzhou,Shangrao,Ji'an,Jiujiang,Nanchang,Yichun,Yingtan,Xinyu.From the school type,The teaching competence of the school teachers from urban is more higher than that of the rural school teachers.In terms of age,teachers aged over 50 have the highest level of teaching competence.From teaching experience,when the teaching age is more than 30 years,the level of teaching competence has increased with the growth of teaching age.In terms of gender,the female teachers' teaching competency level is higher than that of male teachers.From the teacher compilation,the level of teachers' teaching competence compiled by the state is obviously higher than that of the teachers who have not been prepared by the state.From the teacher professional title,the level of teacher's teaching competence is promoted with the increase of the professional title.From the education degree,the overall performance of teachers' teaching competence is improved with the improvement of educational background.In terms of weekly class hours,with the increase of teachers' weekly class hours,the higher of their teaching competence level.(3)The factors that affect the teaching competence level of primary and secondary school English teachers showing no difference.The survey results show that the factors that influence teaching competency of primary and secondary school English teachers include the following aspects:organization of teaching and research activities,teacher training,literature reading frequency,teaching observation,teaching guidance,teaching pressure and so on.In addition,there are still external factors which restrict the improvement of teachers' teaching level,such as the heavy task of teaching,low economic treatment and few opportunities for further study.According to the present situation of teaching competency of English teachers in primary and middle schools,put forward the suggestions as following: improve the teachers' knowledge literacy;Increase the organization frequency of teach and research activities;encourage teachers to participate in teacher training;promote teachers observation and exchange teaching experience;pay attention to the teachers psychology;improve the teachers treatment.
