As the Nobel Prize winner of literature in 1993,Toni Morrison(1931-)is the first African-American woman who wins this prize in the 20th century. The Bluest Eye presents the miserable life of a black girl who dreams of owning a pair of blue eyes. However, this story shows helplessness and sadness of black people who are aphasic in the patriarchal and white society. The Bluest Eye is permeated with aphasic symptoms of black women, the black community and the writer.Morrison unravels and criticizes patriarchal and white hegemonic violence, further delves into its modes and reasons, and arouses black people's awareness of epistemic violence. In light of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's illustration of epistemic violence, this thesis attempts to explore aphasia to discuss the theme of.This thesis is made up of four parts. In the part of introduction, the thesis briefly introduces Morrison and The Bluest Eye.In literature review, this thesis gives a review and summary of previous studies of The Bluest Eye and makes a brief introduction of Spivak and her illustation of epistemic violence.Correspondingly, the author of this paper puts forward the argument and purpose of the present research. In light of the illustration of epistemic violence, part three attempts to explore black women's experience, the black community's growth and the writer as invisible participant, which helps to give prominence to the theme of epistemic violence in The Bluest Eye and lays emphasis on the importance of voicing by aphasia.First of all, this thesis analyzes black women's aphasia from disharmonious family life, mass media and the forbidden zone. While the patriarchal society refuses to admit black female's social value, white hegemonic violence wields its influence on black female by haranguing white values, motoring and suspecting them and forcing them to deep a sense of psychological terror.Through expounding black women's aphasia, this thesis demonstrates that patriarchal violence and white hegemonic violence do harm to black female.By confronting violence and embracing Blues, black women finally make themselves heard.Secondly, influenced by education, class discrimination and indifference within the black community, the black community becomes aphasic.Since white people control its economy and Christianity fetters its soul, this thesis illustrates that hegemonic violence that is exclusive and repressive exerts negative effects on the black community.By helping members of the community and sustaining black culture, the black community makes a voice.Third,on the basis of the illustration of epistemic violence and the close relationship between The Bluest Eye and Morrison, all parts are integrated as an organic entity when Morrison is invisible participant.Integrating aphasia of black women, the black community with the writer's experience, the author of this paper tries to make an analysis of aphasia of Morrison's unequal status as a female writer in the patriarchal society and her unfairness in the white society.Combining narrative strategies, the voicing of black women, the black community with Morrison's experience as a female writer and her concerns about marginalized people, the writer finally makes her voice heard. The last part concludes that exploring aphasia of black women, the black community and Morrison reinforces the theme of epistemic violence that includes patriarchal and white hegemonic violence.Only by recognizing blackness, having a bond with the black community and embracing black heritage can black people make their voice heard.Through applying the illustration of epistemic violence, this thesis probes black people's aphasia that highlights the theme of epistemic violence and reemphasizes the significance of voicing.
