A Report On Translation Of The Excerpts From In The Company Of Strangers In The Light Of Translation Shifts Theory

This thesis is an E-C translation report with its source texts consisting of chapter five,chapter eight and chapter eleven frorm the novel In the Company of Strangers.Such a novel themed female initiation was written by Liz Byrski with an intention to encourage women in modern society to let of their sufferings and realize self-value.There exist quite limited systematic researches on the translation of novels with the theme of female initiation.Inspired by Catford's Translation Shifts Theory,the author of the report seeks application of this theory to translation of novels featured by female initiation on the basis of the translation of excerpts from In the Company of Strangers.In this report,background knowledge and linguistic features are examined and followed by specific examples to illustrate the application of level shifts and category shifts.Level shifts are discussed in terms of tense,aspect and number,and category shifts are analyzed from the aspect of structure shifts,class shifts and unit shifts.The application of Catford's Translation Shifts to render E-C translation of In the Company of Strangers has been testified by the present research.Nevertheless,there still exist limitations of Catford's theory,for it is confined to a shift model that takes effects only on or below the sentence level,ignoring other linguistic elements above sentence level such as rhetoric in novels.Therefore,the report offers many tentative translation methods in terms of rhetoric shifts to remedy this deficiency for the purpose of better fulfilling target readers'expectation.
