A Study Of Music And Performance Of Piano Solo Piee "The Dumb Show" By Contemporary American Composer Joseph Summer

The piano music "The Dumb Show" which was written by American contemporary composer Joseph Summer is from the first draft of Summer‘s opera "Hamlet".It's both background music of the pre-opera dumb show and a piano solo piece.It has not played nor studied in China yet.The main content of this article is the researchers aspect about understanding the music of “The Dumb Show” and approaches of performance.To study the music itself,researcher got first-hand resources through face-to-face interviews with the composer,collecting and sorting out publications and music reviews,as well as references to similar research methods.Also structured and analyzed the background,musical roles,musical materials and their organizational forms.To study the approaches of performance of “The Dumb Show,thoughts about the re-creation of piano playing was contained.Including the thinking of the combination of the piano playing and the plot,the processing of the music details,the use of the pedals,the movement of the large muscles and the fine muscles during playing,and the records of the author's suggestions on the performance,and the clarification of meaning of the special marks.In order to bring the research into practice and give full play to the significance of cultural communication,this paper summarizes the Enlightenment of Summer's creative activities on the practice of contemporary Chinese music practitioners.The aim is to introduce outstanding American contemporary works to Chinese piano professional practitioners and composer practitioners;to record the study and play of contemporary American piano works as an example of "The Dumb Show" as well as the inspiration of Joseph Summer's creative activities to Chinese music practitioners.
