Application Of Theme-based Instruction To English Writing Teaching In Vocational School

Writing is one of the important skills in English learning.However,a wide-spread problem with English writing instruction is students' lack of interest in and passive attitude toward English writing.Most of the English teachers pay much more attention to teach the spoken English,language points and grammar in English class,and pay little attention to give the guidance of the writing.The English classes in vocational schools,are neglected much more than in middle school.Actually,writing is also one of the important English skills,English writing class also needs more attention.So,it is quite important to find a good way to change students' attitude toward writing and stimulate students' interests to write.To solve the problem,theme-based instruction has been proved by some scholars to be an effective way.English writing teaching has attached great attention internationally,and the study activities in writing teaching abroad are also very active.Theme-based instruction is one of the active instructions.Using the Theme-based Instruction,the teacher may find the themes which are interesting and valuable to students.The thesis just tries to evaluate:Can theme-based writing teaching improve students' writing achievement?What is the vocational school students' attitude towards theme-based writing teaching?The teacher chose the students in grade 1 in Vocational and Technical college to make the experiment for one semester.Through a whole-semester teaching experiment,data were collected through questionnaire,pre-and-post tests,and interview.Through data analysis,the results suggested that theme-based instruction functioned in English writing teaching.In a word,the theme-based instruction is said a "meaningful" way to students in the learning process;it connects to students' life experiences,interests,and existing knowledge bases;promotes positive attitudes in learners;and improves student achievement reports which can increase students expression in classes.So Theme-base instruction is related closely to the requirement of writing,it is worth trying to the teacher for improving students' English writing achievements.
