In order to meet the new development of higher education in our country,deepen the reform of teaching and improve the quality of teaching,to meet the needs of the country and society in the new period,and to base on the requirements of "College English Teaching",namely the non-English majors' English teaching,the overall goal of the course has gradually turned to cultivate students' comprehensive language ability.Writing as an important part of the comprehensive English language ability,has been a weak link in college English teaching for a really long time.In order to help students study English better and improve their English writing ability more effectively,this paper will present a teaching and research method which is popular in researchers and scholars.Content-Based Instruction is applied to the teaching of university public English writing,to replace the original traditional writing teaching method.The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that Content-Based Instruction can not only promote the motivation of college students 'English writing,but also improve the students' English writing ability.Mainly through the empirical research the author intends to solve three problems:(1)Whether the content teaching method can promote the motivation and interest of college student writing?(2)Does the content teaching method effectively improve the writing ability of college students? If so,how does it improve it ? If not,why?(3)Will Content-Based Instruction improve college students' writing level? Therefore,in this experimental study,the author has selected four classes of freshman students in Hubei Normal University.Among them,two experimental classes are application of Psychology Class 1501 of 57 majors of Applied Psychology and Class 1509 of 61 majors of Music,taught by the Content-Based Instruction;the other two are Class 1501 of 41 majors of Electronic Information and Class 1501 of 39 majors of Music,instructed by the Product Approach.The author applies aptitude tests,questionnaires,observations,interviews,post-tests and so on.The analysis and discussion of data of the experimental results prove that under the guidance of the Content-Based Instruction of English writing teaching,this method can indeed enhance the students writing motivation and interest.Instruction in this method is more effective to improve students' writing ability than the traditional writing teaching method.Therefore,application of the Content-Based Instruction in college English writing class not only solves major problems in English writing teaching,but also adds an effective research data to the empirical study of domestic content teaching method.In the future teaching of college English writing,Content-Based Instruction can effectively help students to improve their English writing levels,which deserves further promotion in college English writing class.
