Concerning with all languages studying,vocabulary plays an essential role.With the increasing development of economy,English ability of people is becoming extremely important.In most colleges,a large majority of teachers ignore the methods of teaching vocabulary,therefore,students’ vocabulary study is in a low efficiency condition.A more effective vocabulary teaching method is required.Spreading activation model(SAM)emphasizes on the connection of words through the concepts of semantics,phonology and morphology in the internal lexicon.When one word is activated,it will activate other words which have related features.This study aims at applying SAM to vocabulary teaching,to see if it can improve students’ vocabulary efficiency as well as arouse their interest in learning vocabulary.The subjects were 90 sophomores of non-English major in a university of Shenyang and they came from two parallel classes.One class is Experimental Class(EC)which was instructed under SAM in vocabulary teaching.The other class is Control Class(CC)which was guided by utilizing the traditional vocabulary teaching methods.Tests,questionnaires and interview are employed as instruments.And the collected data of the experiment was analyzed by SPSS 17.0.The results shows that SAM is effective for improving students’ English vocabulary and for increasing students’ interest in learning vocabulary.Some pedagogical implications are proposed in the end.
