Research On The Artistry Of Nonlinear Narrative Structure Of Feature Film

Since the birth of film has gone through more than one hundred years,and the movie Exiting the Factory which was released in 1895 was generally acknowledged as the first movie in the history.It can be said to be the early prototype of the feature film.Review the history of film,the nonlinear narrative structure has a long history.Many classic films got popularity not only due to this structure,but also because of its profound artistic value which exerted an indelible impact and significance on later works.Since the twenty-first Century,China's film industry has entered a prosperous period.In order to meet the higher requirements of audience,film practitioners have begun to explore new ways of narrative structure besides the story itself..A Book of the Answer is a script by personal creation,mainly tells the story about three people: a newspaper booth owner with a reading and writing barrier and two people who want to buy the same newspaper.And finally the owner expose his secret that he has concealed for fifty years.This thesis is based on the creative process of A Book of the Answer,combined with the film theories and narrative theories,focuses on the nonlinear narrative structure.Through analyzing the works,it discusses the artistic value of nonlinear narrative structure and the impact and change on the development of the film industry.The thesis is divided into six parts.The first part is the introduction,firstly,it makes a summary on the concept of nonlinear narrative structure,and then expounds the research background and significance;secondly,it does a literature review that the current status of the artistry of nonlinear narrative structure;finally,it clarifies the research methods and innovations as well as difficulties of this thesis.The second part defines the related concepts.First of all,the concept of feature film is traced and defined.Secondly,the concept of narrative structure is categorized and classified.The third part analyzes the narrative mode and its artistry in classic movies.First,combining with related film works,it lists several common narrative modes and gives a brief explanation.Secondly,it summarizes the artistic value of narrative modes from different movies.The fourth part makes a comparative analysis of the personal script and other classic nonlinear narrative movies.First,it compares and expounds the theme implication;secondly,it compares and expounds the plot structure.The fifth part is to analyze the artistic value of the nonlinear narrative structure of the plot from the personal script.The sixth part is the conclusion,which combines the author's own views and thinking to discuss and summarize the above research results,and puts forward some suggestions to the creators of feature film.The six parts of the thesis have both theoretical analysis and example demonstration,hoping to provide some suggestions and ideas for the present film creation.
